Harrison Daily Times

Editor,

In the article in Wednesday’s edition concerning the JPs voting down the road budget, there is one element that was evident to those attending the Quorum Court meeting AND the budget meetings.

This element was that Justice Dan Roberts, the chairman of the budget committee, was the one who proposed adding $200,000 to last year’s road budget. This was the same item that was voted down on the second vote last Monday. The readers need to understand that the one who proposed it voted AGAINST it. And, of course, in lock step, the others who voted the first down, voted this one down too.

This raises an interesting question, one you seemed to allude to in your editorial about the importation of Washington gridlock to Boone County, and that is: Is this about getting the roads repaired, or about who wields the most power and control?

I noted, with interest, that the same ones who voted against it demanded another emergency meeting to address the problem. It does sound like it is more a power struggle than anything else to this reader.

With this in mind, it should be noted that many who voted against it, represent districts that are mainly urban. It should also be noted that Judge Norton provided a JP tour of some of the county’s troubled roads to give a first hand “look-see”. Of those voting against the road budget, only two had accepted the invitation to see for themselves. Justice Dan Roberts, the leader of the opposition, was not one of those.

Sincerely,

John Holmes
